Chinaza Moses is a young, Nigerian fashion designer based in New York City and the creative director of C.Adeola, her very own fashion label that made its first debut at the Spring/Summer 2016 New York Fashion Week and showcased her second collection called “FRACTAL”. This collection was influenced by the Japanese art of Origami and NYC’s street style. I reached out to Chinaza to learn more about her label and what we should expect from C.Adeola in the future.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to become a designer
Chinaza Moses is a dreamer, till this day I feel like I’m a little Nigerian girl in a world of possibilities. I tell everyone I’m in contact with that I’m the poster child for the “follow your dream foundation” lol. I DON’T have a plan “B” all I have is A, which The Lord has placed in my heart and I am determined to see it come to pass. Growing up I never thought designing clothes could be a career. All I knew was that I LOVED working with my hands, creating things and watching people live in them; whether it was making clothing, styling hair, or applying makeup I knew I had a gift to beautify the world.
Tell us more about your brand and past collections
My brand called C.Adeola is a mixture of my first initial and my middle name, which means “crown of wealth”. It originates from the Yoruba tribe in West Africa. I started designing in 2009 while attending design school at a community college in Houston, Texas called Houston Community College. The push that I needed to get my fire lit while I was in design school came from one of my professors who read me like a book. She pretty much told me in a few short words that I had no passion and I need to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. So, from that day forward my goal was to prove to her that she was wrong and I was meant to be the GREATEST DESIGNER THIS WORLD HAS SEEN. So in that school I created my first Couture collection from the ground up called “The Garden of Eden” the inspiration for that collection came from all the great gardens around the world and the woman that frequents them! It swooned with berrys, tans, and a maroon colour palette accented by head pieces and flower shoes. I fell in love with it. Now, past September for NYFW (New York Fashion Week) I debuted my second collection titled “Fractal” which was birthed from a mash-up of origami and street wear that took the two things that I love, Couture and NYC and put them together.
Where do you get inspirations for your designs?
My design inspiration comes from GOD, He created heaven and earth so I use that to inspire me. It can be the season, a concept or idea I’m passionate about, people, a colour, just about anything really.
Have you faced any challenges since launching your brand? If yes, how did you handle them?
LOL entrepreneurs face challenges daily, the first one being, am I going to get out of bed today and create or should I just sleep all day? Lol….the biggest challenge is just staying consistent with your brand, making sure that each day is being used to progress you and your vision in some kind of manner. It’s different when you are not on someone else’s dime and time, you feel less pressured which if not taken seriously could lead to you not producing anything or very little.
