I decided to rename my old series Who Is That Model to Model Spotlight. In this rebranded series, I will shine light on female models that are breaking barriers and dominating the catwalk.

To kick off the series is Lineisy Montero, a model we all got to know and love during last year’s fashion week. One thing that was hard to miss about Montero was her short fabulous afro.

She’s not the first black model to rule the catwalk during fashion week and not the first to sport an afro but the spotlight can’t help but be on Montero, who ruled the runway of Prada in 2015, making her one of the few black models to walk the brand’s runway show in 22 years. The brand didn’t use a black model on their runway for 15 years after casting Naomi Campbell in 1993, then in 2008 Jourdan Dunn broke the spell. Montero went on to dominate the spring/summer 2016 fashion week by walking in over 50 shows. Her domination of the runway was a prime example that designers, who normally go for blonde white models are finally embracing diversity.

The 19-year old Dominican model was discovered in her hometown of Santo Domingo and is currently signed to NEXT Models. She’s one of the models I look forward to seeing on the catwalk during the upcoming fashion week.
