Nikkia is my natural hair beauty for April. She has been one of my major natural hair inspirations for a long time, before she cut off her envious thick and full hair, which almost made me sad but then I got inspired once again by her ridiculously incredible hair cuts. It was a matter of time before she landed on LME.

Natural hair exposé is a monthly feature on LME where I interview naturals both old and new to gain more insights on their natural hair journey, favorite products, hair regimen and advice for other naturals. If you or anyone you know will like to be featured on this series please send me an email at lamodeexpose@gmail.com.

How Long Have You Been Natural?

Hello!! My name is Nikkia & I’m from Key West, FL. I have been natural for 7 years.

What made you decide to go natural?

My decision to go natural 7 years ago came about once I found out I was pregnant with my son. I stopped relaxing my hair and I did my first big chop on July 23, 2009 (a week before I gave birth).

What is your experience so far as a natural?

My experience so far as a natural has been challenging but very fun!! I do get overwhelmed at times, especially when my hair doesn’t want to cooperate with me or when a hairstyle doesn’t turn out at all how I wanted it to; to times where I just decide to chop it all off and start all over again just because I can (I’ve big chopped a total of 4 times). I’ve rocked many hairstyles, from long to creative short cuts to protective styles as well, as a natural than I ever have before. I feel like a hair chameleon which is exciting and fun!! I love that my hair is so versatile and freeing and I feel like it’s the best accessory a girl can have. This hair is tough for a reason and although I wanna just shave it all off or yank it out of my scalp sometimes, I know that deciding to go natural was the best decision I ever made involving my hair.

Please describe your natural hair texture/type.

My hair most likely has 3 different textures in it. The back of my head is home to the tightest curls on my head, most related to 4c. The sides are tight but much looser than the back (4b) and the top and front is looser and frizzier than all the rest of my head (3c-4a).

What are your favorite natural hair products and what have they done for your hair?

I’m slowly turning into more of a product junkie than when I first started this natural journey. There wasn’t much to choose from back in 2009 but now there’s all kinds of products out there!! My favorite product of all time though would have to be Giovanni’s direct leave in!! It’s been a staple of mine since the beginning. I love that stuff!! It defines my curls while keeping them well moisturized too. Another favorite product I can’t be without is Eco styler gel (the olive oil kind). That gel is the best to lay down my hair and edges for a puff look. Nothing else gets my stubborn hairs to be laid down better than that gel.

Describe your hair care regimen and reason behind it.

My hair care regimen is rather simple right now since my hair is in the awkward stage. My regimen also depends on how I want to style my hair the next day too. I tend to co wash my hair everyday no matter what (my hair lovesssss water). I will cleanse with a sulfate free shampoo at least once a week (depending on how much gel I’ve used). I normally don’t deep condition as much as I should, but now that I have color in my hair and a hooded dryer I may start to do that more (at least once a month).

What are your go-to natural hairstyles?

As my hair is growing back from my last bald cut in November 2014, I feel my hairstyles are still pretty limited since I’m still in the awkward stage. I sported a short look for more than half my journey so I kind of lost my touch as to twist outs and styling, so my signature (lazy) hairstyle is the classic puff. Another hairstyle I wear a lot now that I’ve finally mastered it is the good old wash n go, but once my hair grows out more I’ll go back to more styles which the braid out is my all time fav btw!!

What advice do you have for new or old naturals hoping to grow their hair healthier?

My advice for new naturals would be to not give up on your hair. Everyone’s hair is soooo different and you shouldn’t compare yourself to the pics you see all over social media (and trust me I’m guilty of this too). Watch LOTS of tutorials (YouTube is my very best friend) and read blogs (like this one!!) and just practice, practice practice!! Soon it’ll be easy breezy and people will be asking you for advice. Old naturals, let’s encourage our new naturals and also those friends struggling with their relaxed hair (sometimes they need to just let it go lol). Let’s keep this natural hair movement going and continue to grow as rapidly as it is!!

Do you have a blog and/or social media page people can visit for more info?

I’m such a busy gal lately with work and raising my son, but I plan to start posting more pictures of my hair as I continue to learn and enjoy this process again and share my results. My Instagram is @Nikkiamack.
