Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Everyone I know who has been there raves about the arts, culture, entertainment and how it is popularly known for its cobblestone streets. Back in the day the purpose of the cobblestones was to help prevent the early dirt streets from turning to mud during rain but now they are part of the city’s charm. Sadly, only a few of these cobblestone streets remain, but they are more than enough to attract and charm visitors. Charleston is also known for its plantation homes and gardens, which are usually on every visitor’s must-see list.

Charleston is one of the many US cities I will love to visit this year. Everything I’ve read and seen online about this city is just alluring…from the friendly locals who I learned are willing to show off their beautiful city to the beautiful beaches and horse drawn carriages. The city boasts of fun, romance and great food. Below are my top 5 reasons to visit Charleston, South Carolina.

Southern hospitality

Before I visit any new city I always research on how the locals treat visitors and strangers. I want to be in a midst of people that will embrace and show me kindness not people that will make my visit uncomfortable and regrettable. The people of Charleston are known to be extremely friendly towards visitors and always willing to guide and show strangers the best of Charleston.

Food

I love food very much so I always try to visit a city that has great food. I do not discriminate when it comes to food, I can eat both in the restaurant and on the street. Street foods, after all, are usually the best. Charleston comes out on top in regards to food. Everyone I have spoken to and every article I have read online speaks greatly about the food. This comes as no surprise, it is the south after all. There are many nice restaurants with variety of cuisines. There is also a restaurant week that showcases local foods and restaurants.

Culture

This is very important to me. As someone who was born and raised in a culturally rich environment I always try to visit cities that have some culture I can relate to or admire. In South Carolina, you have the Gullah culture practiced by descendants of African slaves who have successfully preserved their African cultural heritage more than any other group of African Americans. Charleston is home to a lot of festivals like Lowcountry Blues Bash, MOJA Arts Festival and Festival of Houses and Gardens.

Attractions

You cannot visit a city without at least seeing one or two popular attractions and take pictures that are Instagram worthy to prove that you were there 🙂 Attractions are one of the things that can make or break a city. Fortunately, Charleston has one of the best attractions in the nation. Some of the notable attractions include Historic District, Charleston City Market, Waterfront Park, Middleton Place Plantation and Fort Sumter National Monument.

It’s Charleston Beaches

It is nice to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and just rest on a cool nice beach. Apparently beaches in Charleston have their own Southern charm and it is hard to choose a favorite because every beach is as gorgeous as the next one. Some of the best beaches include Folly Beach, Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island.
