I had the pleasure of attending the eleventh annual of What’s New What’s Next 2019 hosted by the New York Design Center last week. The event celebrated what’s new and what’s next in ideas, design, materials, and products. Almost 100 showrooms housed in the New York Design Center participated in the event and showcased their latest designs and products.
This was my first time attending this event lauded as the industry’s biggest event of the year. And based on my experience including the knowledge I gained from the presentations by the industry’s top designers, the networking with other creatives, and the inspiration from the showrooms I will definitely be attending next year’s event.
Speaking of inspiration from the showrooms, I saw so many design ideas and trends that wowed me. Phillips Collection showroom looked like an art museum. Interlude Home showroom had beautiful furniture and decors inspired by fashion. I felt so much at home in this showroom. I never knew home decor could be so chic and fashionable.
A lot of the showrooms had swoon-worthy furnishings that I wanted to take home with me. But since I couldn’t take them home I was able to steal some decor ideas from them.
Turn a wall into an art museum
Instead of the typical framed wall art, decorate wall with tiles and stones as seen in the Phillips Collection showroom.
Colorful pieces of furniture
I love color so I always make sure I have some color in my home either with my table lamp or small decor pieces. But I have been inspired to add color in a big way with pieces of furniture.
Use gold accents
Use gold accents to give the home a rich, crispy and contemporary look.
Fancy mirrors
Upgrade wall mirrors with fancy mirrors to give the wall an egdy look.
Architectural pendant lighting
I don’t usually do pendant lighting, I’m a table lamp person. But I loved the architectural pendant lighting that hung from the ceiling in the Julian Chichester & Mr. Brown London showroom.
Infuse fashion into home decoration
Make the home chic and fashionable by using fashion-inspired furniture and decor pieces like the ones in Interlude Home.
Carved wooden art and furniture
Swap some regular art and furniture with carved wooden ones to give the home an Afrocentric look.
