Temporary hair loss and weak edges are two of the biggest hair issues that plague some Black women. These issues are often caused by dandruffs, extreme dry scalp, tight braids and weaves, and poor hair care.
I have always had a full, thick and healthy hair. Although my scalp is dandruff prone but it has never forced me to use anti-dandruff shampoos. Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners were good enough for me. My scalp usually shows signs of dandruffs after few weeks or months without wash, but that is mostly when my hair is in a protective style like weaves or braids.
However, during the winter of 2013 my scalp experienced a severe case of dryness and dandruffs that led to hair loss around my edges. I moved from Houston to New York City middle of 2013 and was coldly welcomed by the harshest winter NYC has ever seen. This rapid change in weather (from Houston’s warm to NYC’s icy cold) damaged my hair.
Instead of feeling sad for myself or regretting my decision to move, I decided to take the bull by the horns. I did intensive research on the Internet and came up with a simple but effective haircare regimen. In order to benefit the most out of this regimen, I made some decisions.
The first decision I made was to cut my hair. It made no sense to me having long hair with itchy scalp and bad edges.
The second decision I made was to start washing my hair twice a week with anti-dandruff shampoo. I went to Walgreens and bought the T +Plus Tar Gel Dandruff Shampoo Extra Strength. This shampoo worked like magic. I saw improvement almost instantly.
The third decision involved massaging my scalp daily with a mixture of different oils to combat dryness and stimulate my hair follicles for growth. I mixed up Jamaican black castor oil, Jamaican organic extra virgin coconut oil, peppermint essential oil and rosemary essential oil in a small applicator bottle and used it every morning.
Applying the mixed oils to my scalp was a lot easier and faster when my hair was short. But now that my hair is growing out, I put it first in two-strand twists making my scalp visible and easy to massage. Go here to learn more about the benefits of these oils.
Washing my hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo and applying natural oils to my scalp have helped my hair to grow back to its formal glory – full and thick. My edges are strong and healthier than they have ever been. I am semi happy I experienced this hair problem because it allowed me to really understand how to better care for my hair.
